Uniclic Locking System

Uniclic Locking System: The Complete Installation Guide

When laying new floors, the uniclic locking system determines the speed and method of the installation. This mechanical interlocking mechanism removes the need for adhesives or nails, allowing planks to connect directly to one another. Developed to simplify the fitting process, this click-lock technology is the standard for modern Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) and Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) flooring.

How the Uniclic Locking System Works

The mechanism uses precisely engineered male and female profiles on the edges of the planks. The female profile, or groove, features a retaining clip, while the male profile, or tongue, has a specific angle and catch.

Uniclic fitting installation

During installation, the fitter holds one panel at an angle of 20 to 30 degrees relative to the laid panel and pushes it forward until the profiles meet. Pressing or tapping the panel down engages the internal clip with an audible click. This action secures the panels horizontally and vertically. The tensioned joint resists water ingress and holds the floating floor together.

Unilin and Alternative Click Technologies

The technology behind the uniclic locking system was developed by Unilin. It relies on an angle-angle method to secure the planks. Alternative mechanisms exist on the market, such as the Valinge 5G system, which uses a fold-down or drop-lock method with a flexible plastic tongue on the short edge of the plank. Pro-Tek™ utilises the proven Uniclic™ method across its flooring ranges to provide a consistent and reliable fitting process.

Subfloor Preparation for the Uniclic Locking System

A level subfloor is a strict requirement when using the uniclic locking system. Any uneven areas, debris, or moisture will cause stress on the joints, causing them to snap or separate under foot traffic.

Ensure the base is flat, clean, and dry. A deviation of no more than 3mm over a 2m span is the standard requirement. Use a self-levelling compound for concrete floors or suitable plywood for timber subfloors. You must also leave the sealed Pro-Tek™ boxes horizontally in the installation room for at least 48 hours to acclimatise the planks to the ambient temperature.

Advantages of the Uniclic Locking System

Opting for the uniclic locking system reduces the time required compared to gluing down materials. Because there is no adhesive, there is no curing time, meaning the floor can be walked on immediately. It is a clean process suitable for trade professionals and competent DIY’ers.

If a plank is damaged by a heavy impact, it is possible to unlock the rows and replace the individual board rather than tearing up the entire room.

Managing Perimeter Expansion Gaps

All floating floors expand and contract with temperature shifts. A 6mm to 10mm expansion gap must be left around the entire perimeter of the room, including around fixed objects like radiator pipes and door frames.

Spacers are used during installation to maintain this distance. Without this space, the expanding floor will push against the walls and buckle upwards. Once the floor is laid, scotia beading or skirting boards cover the gap to complete the installation.

Final Thoughts on the Uniclic Locking System

The uniclic locking system provides a straightforward, mechanical method for fitting modern vinyl floors. By following the preparation steps and maintaining the correct expansion gaps, you ensure the flooring performs as intended.
